Internal Medicine (with focus on Hospital Medicine)
Course Duration 2 years
Course Objectives
  • To acquire core knowledge of medical conditions that are frequently seen in hospitalised patients in the General Medicine department
  • To attain proficiency in history taking and examination techniques in the hospitalised medical patient
  • To attain proficiency in medical procedures (lumbar puncture, bone marrow aspiration, abdominal paracentesis, pleural taps, joint aspiration)
  • To attain clinical competency in managing acute medical emergencies commonly encountered in hospital practice
  • To attain clinical competency in managing a wide variety of chronic and complex medical conditions and their complications
  • To learn effective interpersonal and communication skills including difficult issues such as resuscitation status, futility, withholding or withdrawing therapy, informed consent, educating patients, working within multidisciplinary teams as members
  • To learn the basics of evidence based medicine and its application in day to day clinical practice
  • To learn effective skills which facilitate safe and seamless transitions of care
Exam format

Continual assessment will be based on the following:

  • Bi-Monthly Mini-CEX (Mini-Clinical Examination).
  • Bi-Monthly patient care competency based evaluation for each rotation.
  • Training Log Book: Review of case and procedure log, self-studying hours

A final examination will be conducted at the end of the course and will consist of the following components. The passing score should be 50% or more.

  • Internal Medicine In-Training Examination
