Medical Oncology in Hospital
Course Duration 3 years
Course Objectives

The aim of the programme is to enable the trainee to acquire the skills and knowledge in the following:

  • History taking and examination techniques in the cancer patient.
  • Managing acute oncology emergencies commonly encountered in hospital practice.
  • Diagnosing and treating common cancers.
  • Principles of pharmacology in relation to chemotherapy administration.
  • Chemotherapy administration including indications, dose modifications, side effects and their management.
  • Medical procedures commonly carried out in cancer patients (lumbar puncture, inthrathecal administration, bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy, abdominal paracentesis, pleural tap, insertion of percutaneous long line).
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills pertaining to the cancer patient, including breaking bad news, discussing resuscitation status, withholding or withdrawing therapy, informed consent, educating patients, and working within multidisciplinary teams as members.
  • The basics of evidence based medicine and its application to clinical practice.
Exam format
All trainees are required to undergo a yearly examination. Trainees must pass this examination before they can continue to the next training year.

Applications for the 3rd Intake will open from 1 - 31 March 2014.
