18 August 2016: Founded on 19 July 1957, the Academy of Medicine, Singapore is poised to celebrate its 60th Anniversary in 2017. From a pioneering group of 34 members in its early days, the Academy is now the largest professional body of medical and dental specialists of over 3,300 members in 12 Colleges and 4 Chapters. For almost six decades, the Academy remains committed to advancing specialist education, training and examination; continuing professional development; and professional affairs and opinions.
I am pleased to announce the Diamond Jubilee Celebration emblem that will mark the commemoration of this auspicious and unique milestone in our Academy’s history. The celebration will herald the three key objectives supporting the Academy’s mission in advancing the art and science of medicine in Singapore through: (1) undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate medical education; (2) maintenance of high standards of competency and ethical integrity through continuous professional development; and (3) generation and dissemination of information and knowledge to the public on matters related to health. The three objectives are purposefully embodied by the three stripes in our celebratory insignia. The growth and relevance of the Academy throughout its 60 years is represented by gold which signifies maturity, value, quality and sophistication.
The Diamond Jubilee Celebration will be held in conjunction with the 51st Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine (SMCM) on 21-23 July 2017. The event will culminate with a Gala Dinner on 22 July 2017. The 51st SMCM 2017, appropriately themed “Moving Forward, Staying Ahead”, will endeavour to focus on the latest innovations in medicine and technology in its multi-disciplinary tracks. Look out for our congress announcement and Call for named lectureships nominations.
Also, in commemoration of the Academy’s 60th anniversary, we will roll out new initiatives and programmes to better support our Fellows and strengthen our Academy’s growth and position. Let’s come together and celebrate a momentous Diamond Jubilee in 2017.
